Running Win7 Pro 64 on my main PC. Have another computer on LAN for storage (running Debian 10 and sharing via Samba), which I'll call NAS. When NAS is on everything works as expected - NAS shows up in Explorer (using either a network name or IP address) and I can write to and read from the HDDs on NAS.
My problem arises when NAS is turned off (because I don't need to access the files and want to save power). In that case almost everything I do in Windows results in a 1-2 minute delay (starting Solitaire, right-clicking in Explorer, etc.). Since things work perfectly when NAS is on and the problem only arises when NAS is off I am 99% sure that for some unknown reason Windows is trying to connect to NAS and the delay is some kind of a timeout based on the failure to connect.
2 more pieces of info: (1) I have another PC, also with Win7 Pro 64 and it doesn't have the problem. So, it is obviously a configuration issue on my main PC rather than a LAN or server problem. (2) At one point, on my main PC I mapped a drive letter (Z to one of the HDDs on NAS but I have since removed all drive mappings (using "net use" from a command prompt). I've tried lots of things to fix (sfc /scannow, dskchk, etc.) with no effect. When I boot in safe-mode the problem doesn't exist.
