I suffered an IT crash and brought out from store an old desktop last used about 5 years ago to allow me to do some work offline. It appeared to boot normally until a screen appeared announcing that I must Activate the software (Windows XP) in order to use it! To add insult to injury my options for activating were - online (but without an o/s); by phone (but the rubrics announcing the 'local' and 'international' phone numbers were followed by blanks); by tablet or smartphone using an app (but I don't have either of those). So - completely snookered.
1. How can I sort this out?
2. Any idea what has caused this and is it likely to repeat?
Three house moves after buying this box I have no idea whether I have an XP installation disc, codes or documentation.
In frustration I hunted up a Linux image disc and got that running so the hardware appears to be OK.
