Windows XP activation

I have a windows xp laptop (HP Pavillion dv1000) which I intend to give to charity however before I do this I want to wipe the files off it. I'm unable to do this because it keeps coming up with a message that the Windows XP nees to be activated. I rang the automated customer rep line and input the installation ID however it did not recognise it so I could not get a confirmation ID. Any ideas how I can proceed further?
