Password rejected when I try to switch to my microsoft account on laptop - but same ms account pw accepted on web page.

I'm trying to switch from my recently-created local account back to my Microsoft account on my Windows 10 laptop. But it won't accept the password I put in, even though I have checked the password repeatedly, including signing in via the Microsoft webpage.

Totally stuck here. This is what happens:

First, I hit the Windows key, then select my (local) account, choose manage account and then click "sign in with a Microsoft account instead".

I enter my (outlook.com) email address and go through the authenticator app check without problems.

I enter the password and then get this error message
"The password you have entered for your device is incorrect. Please try again."

But here's the thing. First off, I carefully checked the password is correct. I also entered it from my password app to make sure there were no errors.

Yet, when I go to settings> Microsoft account> manager account — and I am taken to a webpage — I can sign in without a problem using exactly the same password that has just been rejected..

To try to sort this out, I have reset my password (via the web page) and I still have the same problem.

Going direct the Microsoft account, the password works. But if I tried to switch to the Microsoft account from my local account, the password is rejected.

I am totally stuck, any help will be gratefully received.
