repair XP

I have an old computer as a backup unit which is still running Windows XP. Recently, it spontaneously started running chkdsk. After it was done, I could not boot the machine. It would get to the Windows start-up screen then lock up. I've been trying to run the repair disc, also the image discs. None of those worked. I cannot figure out how to get to boot from the DVD drive.
