re activate XP

We have a machine that ran windows XP. Some software and it seems hardware too is dedicated to that and we are not in a position to change. We needed to reformat the hard drive. We did so and re loaded XP. XP calls for the software to be activated. The call centres are unwilling or unable to do so. How do we around this problem.Thank you
