when downloading any programs/updates install stop on windows 7 computer

when I download any programs/updates like windows update, norton 360, garmin program the installation stops after a short time. I think I have had this problem before and MS agent went into my computer and fixed it.I don't think that it is a complicated fix just I don't remember how they did it.thanks
