Backing up files keeps failing get error message, 'Shadow copy time out', so cannot back up files on laptop Windows 7

Hello, I have been trying since yesterday to backup my files on my laptop, Windows 7 , HP Compaq Presario CQ56 Notebook. But I keep getting this error message , 'Shadow copy timeout'. I am trying to copy onto a DVD disc. I wanted to upgrade, but at this point I can only safely upgrade to Windows 8.1 because
