cannot connect to network on xp rig

Windows XP desktop pc will no longer connect to my preferred wireless network even though there are five green bars and it shows up on my list.It's set to automatically connect but will no longer do so.After i click the connect button the egg timer spins for a couple of minutesand then nothing happens it just goes back to the network list again.It used to automatically connect every time. No settings have been changed and no new programs have been installed. What could cause this?
