Replacing kernel32.dll, how?

N

Norm

My crashed HD with w95 on had a more upto date version of kernel32.dll
than my fresh install of W95.

Managed to get the old version to the desktop but windows wont let me
copy it in the system folder because the existing one is in use!

How do I get round this?

Thanks

Boot to DOS.
Delete the old kernel32.dll and replace it with the new one.

That will work...but rather than delete the old file...
I'd rename it...at least until it's confirmed that the new one worked

Thanks, hoped a solution could be done from windows.
Yes made a copy from within windows, now see if i can remember those
DOS commands.

You will need to boot to pure dos...
so you will have to use a boot disk
or else shutdown and restart in dos

Done the replacement, checked the rename had been done using DIR
command.

Unfortunately window wouldnt load properly, stopping on protection
error. Undid the replacement, windows working again.

Very strange since the replacement .DLL clearly worked on my previous
install.

Pity because the latest Irfanview ( and ccleaner) are not fully
functional inspite of their claims they work in W95. They will crash -
give an error indicating kernel32.dll cant find a link to a debugger!

This *might* work:

Try putting the newer version of kernel32.dll in the Irfanview folder (and
the ccleaner folder)

it should not effect windows...but the applications *might* look in their
own folders first ?

Have you considered using the version 3.80 of Irfan Viewer that was made
specifically for Win95 Gold and Win95A? It was available in an installer file named
iview380_win95.exe but I don't know if it is still available online. It is
different than the standard iview380.exe installer. I could upload it to my web
space for you if you want to try it. Send me an email using a valid address, and I
will send you a link. Email me at glen dot vee @ gmail dot com

If you have Win95B or C, you shouldn't have a problem with Irfan Viewer, so I am
guessing you have Win95A or Gold.

Tried but still same errors.
Gone back to earlier Irfan and ccleaner.

And thanks to all replies.

What is the version number of the old kernel32.dll and what is the version number
you are trying to replace it with?
What version oif Irfan Viewer are you trying to install, and what loss of
functionality do you see?
I don't use the latest version of Irfan Viewer with Win95 (I have an installation of
Win95B here).

4.00.1111   works

4.03.1212  doesnt

when rying to view installed plugins in Irfan 4.10 " The
procedure entry point IsDeuggerPresent could not be located in the
dynamic link library Kernel32.dll "

Same error in CCleaner Versions 2 which also says a device is not
working --this might be due to no HD attached directly to MB
connection is on PC Ultra100controller card .

Not too important a problem since old versions work. Its more of an
interesting puzzle.

Thanks for interest.

Regarding the kernel32.dll, version 4.03.1212 was part of the USB Supplement, IIRC.
I don't have a Win95B system plugged in right now. If you are trying to force-feed
the newer kernel32.dll without installing the complete supplement, well, I would
*expect* a protection error!

You should be installing the USB Supplement, not just trying to update the one file.
In fact there was also an update to the supplement which should also be installed,
which may bring the kernel32.dll to version 4.03.1214

Found USB exe on CD and installed, kernel32 updated as you said.

Installing the .exe did a scandisc, found errors and corrupted
Firefox. Had to manually remove all firefox folders and registry entry
to reinstall (was only way to get back working FF as
uninstall/install combinations wouldnt work).

That aside Irfanview came up with same error " The
>> procedure entry point IsDeuggerPresent could not be located in the
>> dynamic link library Kernel32.dll ".

Think its time to call it a day. Stick with old versions.

Thanks again
