Western Digital model WD800B012

I have an old 80 GB WD USB external hard drive that fi=ails to operate. Removed it from the casing and connected the SATA hard drive to an old Xp operated computor. The hard drives turns but fails to recognise the drive.Following the Googled diskmngt route I can see the drive with an unallocated portion. However if I format the drive I will lose all the saved information.IHow do I do it without losing all my saved data?I am not a computer boffin so please be gentle.Zach
