Windows 8 upgrading to 10?

I purchased a laptop years ago and it came with windows 8. is it possible to upgrade to 10? when using the windows upgrade option the product key on my laptop doesnt work for upgrading?, says to check the code (copied and pasted from cmd) so theres no way its wrong. theres a few apps id like to use hat require upgrading to windows 10
