I upgraded 98 to IE6

I have used Win98 since it first came on the market. Years ago, when
they first came out with IE6, I installed it and my system got really
unstable. I finally formatted and reinstalled Win98se. Ever since I
have never upgraded IE beyond 5.5. I have had many people tell me
that IE6 has now been repaired, so I just finally installed it again.
I must say it's working flawlessly, at least so far. At the same time
I dont see anything different from ver5.5. Anyhow, it now says I have
Version 6.0.2800.1106 (why so many numbers?). I am trying to find out
two things.
1. Is this the last version, or is there an upgrade (where to get it
if needed?).

2. One feature about IE I have always hated is that it always opens a
new page ON TOP of the page I was reading. In other words, if I am
reading a page about dogs, and click on a link about cats, the cats
page buries the dog page. In other words I want the NEW page to open
in the BACKGROUND. I can do this with both Firefox and Opera (I have
both installed). I know this was not possible with IE 5.5, and it was
always my biggest complaint about IE, but I would have thought IE 6
fixed this (or at least has a setting to change the way a new page
opens). I am not finding any setting for this, in fact I dont notice
any changes from 5.5. Is there some setting, trick, tweak, or other
way to change this? I am on dialup, and I want pages to load in the
background so I can continue reading the page I have, not staring at a
blank page until it loads.

Yes, I know someone will ask...... I use Firefox much of the time,
Opera occasionally, but for example, when I read news sites (like
CNN), Firefox can not load Media Player videos, so I am always having
to use IE anyhow. I find myself using IE more than the others lately.
None of the browsers seem to do everything, so I struggle between
them. IE also opens much faster than Firefox, so I keep it set as
default.

Can anyone help on these two questions.

Thanks

RL

I still have a win98 installation but use it rarely.
Never had a problem with IE6.

If you want to get all the Win98 updates that MS still has on their site...
I'm pretty sure you will need IE6 installed to even get there.
(Never tried with IE5.5)

Use CrazyBrowser. It doesn't replace IE, just adds tabs and a few
options. Much nicer.

I read CNN video news in Firefox 1.5.0.12

In Firefox 1.5, click Tools/Options/Downloads and then click View and
Edit actions. Highlight WMV and then click Change Action. Choose
either the default application (Windows Media Player) or customise to
an application (e.g. Media Player Classic) of your own choice.

(I'm not sure, but in other versions of Firefox, the setting need to be
made under Preferences/Content/File Types)

Oh, and of course you must allow JavaScript and Flash on the CNN site.

Ctrl N opens a new browser window where you can go to you next site.
Your current browser wndow will be minimized. You can then click on
the old window you were using and it will be maximized while the new
site is being loaded in the background.

You have the most recent version of IE installed, but please go the
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and make certain that IE and the machine
itself is fully patched.

TweakUI (not the XP version!) includes a tweak to stop applications from
"stealing focus" IIRC.

1. You have the last version of IE that can be installed on Win9x systems.
It is known as IE6SP1 (Service Pack 1). IE6 may not look much different, but
it works much better and is much safer than IE 5.5.

2. There is no "tab" feature in IE6 as there is in those other browsers (IE7
*does* have tabbed browsing.) What you want to do is hold down the Shift key
while clicking on the link. That will open it in a whole new window. You can
switch back to the previous page while the new page is loading.

Thank You and everyone that replied. I know I can use keys or my
mouse to minimise new (or old) windows in IE, but I often open 4 or
more windows. For example, I do a google search for something, then
as I read down the list I open 4 or 5 pages from the list in another
window. I dont want to have to keep minimizing all of them. That's
just too much screwing around. I want to set IE to ALWAYS OPEN A NEW
PAGE IN THE BACKGROUND. Firefox has that option, as well as Opera.
Why did IE miss this feature? It really irritates me to have new
pages opening on TOP, when I am not done reading the older page.
Being on dialup, I click on links to open while I keep reading what
I'm doing. Worse yet are when popups start and open on TOP and I
totally lose track of what page I was even reading. (yes I do have a
popup blocker, but sometimes I have to turn it off to get desirable
page links). If I expected any improvement when I installed IE6, it
would have been a setting to ALWAYS OPEN NEW PAGES IN THE BACKGROUND.
How many years does it take MS to add a simple option like this?

Are there any addons that will perform this task in IE? I do not mean
complete front ends, just simply to perform this one task? Even the
tweak programs lack this...

Thanks

No, there is no such setting in IE6 or below, and since I don't use or know
IE7 all that well, I can't comment. But what you describe isn't likely to be
there, either. As far as I'm concerned isn't much improvement over the
Taskbar itself.

I've never heard of anything like the add-on you want. If you *need* this
feature, you probably need to use one of the other browsers. Of course, they
are also probably limited in other ways.

Why not use FF? There are so many extensions that make it so
customizable I can't imagine why anyone would use an old version of IE,
except in cases where pages render so poorly in non-IE browsers as to be
unusable.

TweakUI from Microsoft has an option on the General tab to prevent
programs from stealing focus. I don't know if that would help in your
case or not. I still say your best bet is an IE add-on that will give
you tabs for new pages.

Interesting... I abhor TUI, but your suggestion sounds like a real
possibility. But "tabs" are not what the OP wants. That would still require
clicking on something before continuing to read the original page.

Nope, they load in the background, don't "open" until user clicks on
them. Configurable as to location too (top/bottom/etc) and color.

IOW, click on an URL while reading a page, new tab loads the
URL...continue reading original page, click another URL, still
another tab begins to load...finished with page, click on any tab, new
page is displayed. Actually, just closing the current tab (page) will
display the next in sequence.

OK, sounds right... Do you have any links to such an add-on? A quick search
for "tabbed browsing add-on ie6" brings up an MSN add-on (YUCK!), perhaps a
couple of others that apparently don't work too well, and a lot of people
asking about it in newsgroups that are repeated ad infinitum by all those
web sites that repeat newsgroups.

That's a different browser, not an IE6 add-on.

This program will do what you require (autosizer)
http://www.southbaypc.com/AutoSizer/

Once you`ve got it installed set Internet Explorer
to minimised within autosizers` settings.

Now when you open a url from the webpage that you`re reading, by
right-click, and open in new window it will be automatically
minimised to the toolbar and leave the original webpage unaffected.

Not exactly an add-on. That's like MSN and AOL browsers. I think they're
called "shells". Major installation. But I suspect that's the ONLY way
you'll get tabbed browsing out of IE6.
