go to MY Computer

and click on the cdrom icon

Be warned that power outages can damage the operating
system enough to require reinstallation. But your post
did not suggest this had happened, i.e. you did not say
the PC would not reboot or behaved abnormally.

My Computer and TweakUI settings govern whether a
CD drive will spontaneously run SETUP or other executables
that may be in a CD root directory. This feature was
(before XP) usually called AUTORUN and is described
in your Help file.

He wants to know why Auto Insert Notification isn't working, not how to get
around it.

1. Right-click My Computer, then click Properties, then click on the Device
Manager tab.

2. Click the + sign by "CDROM", then double-click the CD drive itself (if
you have more than one, you'll have to check them all.)

3. Now click the Settings tab and look for "Auto Insert Notification" is
checked. If not, check it. If checked, uncheck it, then click OK, then click
Close and restart your system. If you previously UNchecked the item, you'll
have to go back and go through the whole procedure again to re-check it.

BUT!!! It sounds like the Registry got corrupted and this may just be one
sign, and there may be other things gone wrong that you just haven't
encountered yet. I suggest you restore a Registry backup. Is this a recent
event? How long ago did the power outage occur?

Yes, that was obvious.
I was trying to have the OP determine whether or not the cdrom is operative.

Though it's not at all clear from your post that you were proposing a test.
Looks like a workaround to me.

I was just taking things one step at a time.

I figured that if the cdrom was not working...then no sense in trying to
figure out why auto-start didn't work <G>

OTOH: If the cdrom was fine and the OP was able to start things manually...

*then* the lack of auto-start could be remediated

My sister has that problem with my brother-in-law. Auto-start doesn't
work and neither does he.
