Headphone jack not recognized ...Sound, Playback ....only Loudspeaker listed

Hi there,I'm running an old HP laptop with Windows 7 .... wanted to listen to an online course over headphones and I can't switch from the laptop speakers to headphones as they are not listed under Sound, Playback ... Have updated/checked audio drivers... message is that they are up-to-date .... It's like the headphone hardware jack is not being seen.Any help appreciated.Best regards.Smeagol.
