Windows version? The location of the padlock icon has changed in IE7. See
IE7 Help > How to know if an online transaction is secure > How can I tell
if I have a secure connection.

The OP did state that "missing the lock beside the addressbar [sic]". In
previous versions the lock was in the status bar so presumably the OP
actually knows where to look for the lock.
