HP Laptop Slow and Number of Process on Task Manager

My HP laptop computer slows down to a proverbial crawl, especially when I watch YouTube. When I open Task Manager I'm presented with a bewildering plethora of things running. Literally hundreds of processes. Right now Microsoft Edge is listed 18 times and there are a total of 88 background processes. I know I should close down some processes, but I don't know which ones are causing the trouble. Any advice? It would be helpful if I could know general things like "you can close anything that has an .xxx extension." Thank you.
