windows 7 laptop keeps changing from "duplicate" to "computer only" when i close the lid

i recently tried to connect my laptop to an external monitor, and ever since then, if i close the lid, or use a game in fullscreen mode, it switches from "duplicate" to "computer only" monitor setting, making everything bigger and messing it up. i tried to use this link: Page Not Found - Lenovo Support US every time i close the lid, those settings just revert back too! argh! tired of this issue and i need help. thanks in advance.
