Windows 7 Activation and Product Key

I have a Windows 7 install disc with product key purchased 10/22/2009. This license isn't in use on any machine I own. When attempting to install on a spare laptop I got a new hard drive for, I get a prompt saying that the product key is not valid. MS support only directs me to the community. How do I go about activating the key?
