AdAware SE Personal Build

D

Dapper Dan

I just read the tail end of the recent thread regarding AdAware SE and would
appreciate if someone wouldn't mind taking a few minutes more and clarifying
this for me.

My version of AdAware is SE1R210.27.12.2007. Any time I check for updates
I'm told that I am up to date. A visit to the Lavasoft website explains that
support for this version expired December 31, 2007 but that I should replace
it with AdAware 2007. The problem is that 2007 requires Windows 2000 or
better.

Mike has explained to Heather that Lavasoft has fixed the problem with the
dated definitions and that she can download new definitions for AdAware SE
from the Lavasoft site. I do indeed see where the DOWNLOAD button is on the
webpage that Mike referenced but Lavasoft is still saying that they no
longer support AdAware SE.

So the question is, did Lavasoft simply fix the issues related to dated
definitions or is AdAware SE now back with full support. Given that this
'puter operates with Windows Me, it would appear to me that either SE
remains supported otherwise I must uninstall it because I won't be able to
run AdAware 2007.

Am I right or did I miss something?

Hi Dan.....

Mike can officially answer this, but it seems to me that AA no longer
supports our older version, yet still put out defs for Jan. 14,
2008.....which is a tad confusing.

I don't want to use 20 meg of AdAware.......and there were problems at
first with XP (which I now use).....so frankly I am going to stick with
Spybot and Spyware Blaster. There is another spyware program called
"Super Antispyware", I believe. The author is often on the anti-spyware
news groups and due to my age, I have forgotten his name momentarily. I
will look it up for you. I have tried it, but I hate change so stayed
with AA and Spybot. But if they won't update it, then forget it!!

Hope this *ramble* helps, but you basically have it right!!

Thanks Heather. You're basically confirming what I thought I understood.
Unless Mike has new information related to our mutual understanding, it
seems to me that the time has come to uninstall AdAware.

Thanks for the recommendation I'll read up on Super AntiSpyware tomorrow.

I long ago ceased to use AdAware - not that I ever did more than install
it.

I only mentioned to Heather where to find the download button when she
said she could not find it on a blog first referred to by John John and
subsequently that the same blog now reported that an amusing bug she had
noticed had now been fixed.

Thanks Mike. AdAware will be off this 'puter in no time. Timing is great in
that tomorrow I plan on reinstalling Windows Me primarily as a learning
exercise. I have the QUICKRESTORE discs that I purchased several years ago
when the harddrive failed. Moreover I have taken note of one of your recent
responses regarding the updates so should have this back to factory
installed state by tomorrow noon.

Dan,

Best of luck. If you encounter any problems feel free to drop me an
e-mail (mike.maltby@gmail.com) if you think I might be able to help. My
on-line time is a bit erratic at the moment due to problems with my phone
line. No phone calls in or out but am just about able to maintain a
reduced ADSL connection. I'm hoping however that my provider might manage
to get things fixed tomorrow but am not banking on it.

Thanks for the offer Mike. I have quite a bit of documentation you authored
going back several years regarding customization and partitioning etc etc so
I'm hoping that all falls into place as planned. Having said that, I'll have
no reservations coming back seeking clarification in the event that I
require a little more guidance.

Thanks again, it is greatly appreciated.

It is your prerogative to uninstall Ad-Aware on your 'puter(s), but for
fact's sake, one can still download the updates manually in the fashion Mike
described and thereby keep the program
up-to-date. When I last scanned with SUPERAntiSpyware, it found some(6)
Ad-Aware cookies exclusively, nothing else.
Therefore I am keeping Ad-Aware for a while, until it should become
'completely useless'
A weekly scan with the program seems to fulfil that purpose.

Thanks for the feedback Harry, however if it's not being supported I have no
interest in running something that is out of date. I've moved on.

Me too, Dapper.......I just use Spybot each Wednesday when the new defs
come out. And SpywareBlaster is permanently on here, of course.

Hello Dapper,

I may be able to help.

I, too, use Adaware SE. I can install version 2007, but when I did install
it on one of my computers (I have an old laptop I use as an emergency backup
machine which does run XP Pro, and cannot run Vista, because of inability to
have enough RAM, as required by Vista. My main Win XP computer is also a
laptop, but is designed to work with Vista, should I choose to switch to
that.), I discovered it would not let me configure it unless I bought
Adaware, which would come with another of Lavasoft's products to allow me to
do the configuration I can do with version SE.

Now, the support for the SE version, itself, may not be provided anymore,
but, as long as the definitions can still be obtained and installed, that is
fine. This means, no matter which version of Win you are running, you can
still use your SE version. All you have to do is to download the newest
definitions, decompress them, and then copy them over the old definitions
(found in the folder which has Adaware on your computer -- on mine, it is
found in C:"Program Files"\, on your computer, it may be located elsewhere.

BTW, the current edition of Adaware 2007 Free might be fixed to allow you to
configure it as you need, without forcing you to buy it. I am considering
downloading it and trying it out but, I will not get rid of SE until I am
sure version 2007 works as well (configurability, that is).

I am glad I decided to check the Microsoft site to see if others have been
having the same update problem I am having. I now know that my going to the
Web site to download updates was the right thing for me to do.

Kind regards,

Amigan

Dapper Dan

Thanks for the feedback, Amigan.

I appreciate the "fix", but quite frankly it's a lot more than I am prepared
to do simply because there are other applications that provide the same
coverage, without having to manipulate anything. Specifically,
SUPERantiSpyware, which Heather recommended, works just fine, and in
combination with Spybot, I feel adequately covered.

I'm not sure why you must "jump through hoops" when operating with XP &
Vista. I too have other computers operating with XP and Vista and I
understand that WINDOWS DEFENDER is probably every bit as good as AdAware.

Again thank for the update Amigan, it is appreciated.

I didn't realize that I could still use Ad-Aware by downloading and

Meanwhile.. I discovered another fine alternative (and free) - Comodo's
BOClean:

Comodo Anti-Malware
FREE lifetime license

"The Best to stop and remove *rootkits* in real time. Stop spambots,
hijackers & keyloggers. Stop identity thieves from getting personal
information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and
repack malware in total"

The Comodo products support Win98 and Winme.

A fine alternative, Ogg and by the looks of it, even better than either
Ad-Aware or SUPERAntiSpyware. I'll 'have a peak' at it and then decide what
to do. No use having more than one application doing the same job.
Thanks for the 'discovery'.

Upon a closer look it turns out that this program (BOClean) consumes quite a
bit of user- and system resources.
The trade-in may not be acceptable to everyone.

I'm just about to try it on my WinME pc too. (I had dl'd it, installed it,

meagre meagre 1ghz 756mb winme pc. Are you sure there aren't any automated
features you can turn off?

Those would impact startup IMHO, the burden on resources is a built-in
negative program feature, the way I see it. In order to be sure, I would
have to reinstall and rerun.
Don't have quite the power with only 700mhz and 512 MB's of RAM.

I just tried it on my winme pc. I ran into a couple of problems when I ran
the "check for update", and requested the malware list the process
stalled - I had to kill the process. I already had quite a bit of stuff
running at the time - my toolbar has quite a few apps loaded in memory - so
maybe BOClean was just one too many. I also noticed a few initial settings
that could be disabled - [1] launch at startup, [2] monitor pc continuously.
I disabled those, but the application still stalled on my pc. I had to do a
hardware restart to recover. I hated doing that because then Scandisk runs!
That's enough of a problem to uninstall the app.
