Windows 7: Do many programs update in C drive even if you installed it elsewhere?

You'd think that when a program updates it knows where it is and updates at that location. But it seems that both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome seem to update on C drive even though they are installed on D drive. Is this normal? Is there any way of getting it to update at its present location?
