Can't connect to the internet wirelessly

My brother's laptop can't connect to the internet wirelessly, we tried troubleshooting but it keeps saying "ethernet cable not plugged in". The wireless internet adapter is missing from the device manager, I followed different youtube tutorials but to no avail. I used SDI (Snappy) to try and install a new wireless adapter but it doesn't work. Pls I need help T_T
