Windows 7 Machine won't update any Microsoft products

I have an old XP machine that I updated to Windows 7-32 Home Edition. It has 4GB of RAM.I can download 3rd-party software, but it won't update Defender or load Edge. It won't do Windows Updates either. It shows various error messages when attempting, sometimes saying my internet is down even when I can go to CNN or Bing.I also cannot log on to my Microsoft account. The curser arrow never changes to a finger.I did an telephone activation and it was OK. The OS that I purchase on eBay was sealed.
