My laptop has an external monitor only. Now on boot up with windows 10 no signal. I have to hard shut down a couple of times for it to see the monitor

My laptop screen died so I am using an external monitor via the HDMI port to DVI on the monitor. Worked fine for several months but now on laptop power up no signal is displayed. After a couple hard shutdowns it works fine. Im using the laptop and external monitor to write this. The right click on screen and hit display settings shows no display. Also right clicking on volume in taskbar does not show HDMI. I need to make external monitor default or primary.
