help fixing problem

For some reason, for the last month whenever I click on "Open containing
folder" in the find file dialog box, or when I get properties of a
shortcut and click "Find target", or anything that would normally open
up a window containing files, nothing happens.

Also, the system tray icon for Personal Web Sharing is failing to
appear. PWS still works in the limited capacity I use it to occasionally
share files with an old powermac (I haven't tried to use it for anything
else), but it's annoying to have to go drill down through the start menu
and open up the Personal Web manager to turn it on and off instead of
just being able to do it instantly from the start menu.

Could somebody suggest ways to restore these two functions? I have
absolutely no idea what could have caused them to fail. I don't even
recall installing or upgrading anything new that would screw them up.
I've checked for spyware with Lavasys Ad-Aware, and viruses with AVG,
both the free editions.

1. A first question would be: Did you apply the updates to PWS previously?
2. Did you install anything related to PWS such as Cold Fusion or other
modifying apps?
3. What version are you running? [Is it PWS or really IIS?]

When I ran PWS as/in conjunction with, a VPN, when this issue cropped up,
IIRC, some PWS specific registry entry had been inadvertantly corrupted or
lost. A re-install fixed the issue. Several of the later fixes to
IE6/Win98SE caused issues with PWS [in fact shutting off some of its aspects
related to ActiveX, web viewing, and other].

Some of the issues related to changes in:

DCOM,
Java,
Scripting Host,
MSMQ,
ISAPI,
VBS,
MMC,
HTML handling [this was a major issue with the IE6 updates],
ActiveX (ADO),
Front Page Server Extensions,
base FTP, and third party download managers,
MTS,
MIS,
MCS,
MDAC,
ODBC,
Microsoft OLE DB Provider,
among numerous others

Old help sites were:
http://www.microsoft.com/iis/iis4/

http://www.microsoft.com/solutions/msi/

I also noted that installing a secondary third party browser [and its
updates] would at times shut off /disable some of PWS's functions when
running as an FTP server [which was disabled in the latter PWS/IIS updates],
and, at times, as a WEB server.

Sorry, put that in the out box rather than drafts so it was sent before it
was finished.
The basic issues previously outlined relate not only to PWS/IIS, but also
general functioning in Win98. Particularly the ActiveX, html, and Explorer
functioning.

Check that you have clicked/ticked load on Startup in the settings for
PWS/IIS.
Also in the registry - run services, and tray functions/settings.

I am running the version that was included on the original OEM Win98SE
cd, that is now damaged. There is a version of the cabs in a folder that
lets me install components with "add/remove programs", and I've tried
removing PWS and then reinstalling it.

As for clicking "load on startup", I have absolutely no idea where that
is located. I've been all over PWS Manger and can't find it. PWStray IS
set to load in the registry and in MSconfig.

BTW, I'm even more annoyed about not being able to click "find target"
or "Open containing folder" than the disappearing tray icon, and am
completely stumped on why that isn't working.

Here is everything at the MSKB on "Find Target"...
http://support.microsoft.com/search...get...&catalog=LCID=1033&1033comm=1&spid=1139

Unfortunately, although a few might have applied to your case, they end
up saying... "STATUS: Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in
Windows 98."

SO, I guess, check for "NoFind" in your Registry...

"START button, Run, RegEdit", & navigate to...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Exp
lorer

That is,
(a) Click plus signs, beginning left of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER",
& ending left of "Policies".
(b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane, & look in the right pane.
(c) R-Clk "NoFind", if there, in the R-pane, & select "Modify".
(d) Change it to all zeros... 00 00 00 00.
Right-Arrow to left of "01", use delete key, type "00".
(If in DWORD format, just make it a zero.)
(e) Exit, & it may be necessary to reboot.

WARNING: Do not get carried away in the Registry. It is very important
to the proper functioning of Windows. Muss it badly, & you must boot to
DOS & "Scanreg /Restore". Then, choose the date of the last successful
boot from the five offered.

I don't know anything about that, & I hesitate to guess until all
knowledgeable people have perished or gone into a hibernation like PA
Bear. Maybe look through "Start button, Help, Contents, Connecting to
Networks".

I couldn't even find that tidbit in the knowledge base, however it
didn't help. There was no "NoFind" entry in the registry that I could
locate.

I'm at the point where I would just pull out the CD and reinstall, but
unfortunely the OEM CD is scratched. Is there something that can extract
my drivers onto a CD so I can take a generic win98 CD, reinstall
windows, then restore my drivers including the network drivers using the
extraction CD?

Hey, I'm not ignoring this, just trying to find my old files and info from
IIS 4.0 [SE version}.

I did run across an update for IIS, and some jotted notes which indicate
that IE 6 updates were killing off functions in IIS [and Front Page 98],
which I was attempting to fix with copies of some dlls from IE5, but that's
about all I've found so far. And that may be as far as I can presently get,
as all the older papers and stuff has been packed away and stored.

Might check Microsoft KB to see if any IIS 4.0 info is still available.
Google may locate some, but I didn't check.

Too bad. But, no, that one wasn't in the MSKB search I posted.

Well...

http://www.hexff.com/win98_install.php How to Clean Install
This first has it all, but..
(a) Perhaps don't do the 2.5 swap file thing, &
(b) You may rather have multiple partitions, &
(c) Attend its warning: Have any non-Windows peripheral drivers
available to install afterwards. Here...

http://www.pchelpandconsulting.com/links/windows.html WinDrvExpert
http://www.jermar.com/wdrvbck.htm WinDrvBckup free version

Those two supposedly back up all currently installed drivers, such
that they can be reinstalled. I never tried it but have seen a favorable
report/three-- & one (by glee) that was so-so (or worse). SO, BETTER
make a full system backup, before wiping Windows.

And, after a fresh install of Windows 98, Windows Update will not work
(as Terhune discovered), until you update IE to at least v.5.5. Here is
v.6 (as Bear posted a short time after Terhune's report)...

Download IE6 SP1 (full 9 KB - 77.5 MB)
