Hi, a friend of mine has a older pc with windows 98 on it not windows

windows 98 SE but not regular 98.Its a v92 modem the original I
beleive was a v 90.I have a 98 se disk but dont want to install it
because the pc doesnt have all the original drivers disks dont no if
that would be a problem or not.Can anyone recamend a modem that will
work ok in it for dial up?Probably better than putting another
operating system on it or if there is any other ideas that would make
it work like a generic driver that would fuction only for dial up

First thing to check is whether the computer had all the updates done.
UNIMODEM was updated, DCOM was updated, along with several other key files.
If none were done or it is unknown, Microsoft had a Customer Service Pack
available for 98 [Gold/FE] which contained a few updated files, and has DCOM
and some other downloads available.

As for whether the v92 modem will work, it may not, at least in voice. You
can check over on the UK modem site for any available 98 files or mods that
might be available for the specific modem..

As for upgrade to SE: Most of the computers could running 98 can run SE
[its just a service edition]. The present drivers would likely be Okay for
the other devices, or would be replaced during the upgrade install.

Hey, MEB... Last thing I ever recommend is an upgrade in place (as opposed
to a clean install.) Not quite as bad as an overinstall, but damned near.
LOTS of potential disasters in the wings.

Hey Gary...
Well, I based that upon the previously offered 98SE upgrade CD provided by
Microsoft. That was the 98 updates rolled into, were it NT, Service
Pack1 which was named Windows 98 Second Edition Updates. That was the
ORIGINAL way most of us got SE. Which we all installed without too many
difficulties [all right, yes I remember, it did fill these News groups with
hundred of complaints].

Were it the querier's computer<< AND all drivers and program updates were
downloaded PRIOR to the clean install then I would also recommend the clean
install. Good time to get rid of the accumulated junk.

You should still be able to install that modem.
If the installer asks for your win98 cd...a win98se cd should also work...
but if you want, you can upgrade win98 to win98se first.

To do that you should uninstall your virus checker and any version of IE
newer than what was there originally.

next, rename win.com

and finally opt to install win98se back in the same (original) windows
folder

Sometimes the chipset manufacturer (eg Conexant) has generic drivers
that will work with your modem.

Can you post the part numbers on the biggest chips?
