internet properties freezes

I have a windows 98 machine that i have used for years.
Internet has been dial up until recently. i installed
a network card and put it on a router. now, the dial up won't work.
It shows its connected in the tray, but the browser won't load.
i went to control panel and brought up Internet options.
the window opens with 7 tabs on the top.

all the tabs work EXCEPT the tab i need, the connections tab.
when i go to connections, the screen remains on the last
selected tab and the Internet properties window freezes.
Is there a way to fix this short of re installing windows?

Not good. First try checking your NETWORK settings in Control Panel, and
remove the old modem/dialup [this presumes you have a local network.and have
no present need for the modem]
While there make sure that it properly shows your NIC(s) and other present
configs, such as IP settings.
Make sure your network is in the same work group/name and if using Windows
Networking as Login, that it is configured for Quick Login.
Check via the router software that it is also properly configured [DHCP and
DNS or the right static addresses if that's what you did].

Prior to registry modifications, run Connection Wizard choosing the
NIC/router as the new connection.

If these don't help, post back for some registry mods [unless someone else
jumps in with them]

If you installed a network card and a router, I am guessing you now have some sort
of broadband Internet connection now....DSL, cable....is thast correct? If so, why
do you want dial-up to work?

Or, are you still using dial-up for an Internet connection, and only using the NIC
for a local network of computers (in which case, why are you using a router)?

If dial-up shows as connected in the tray icon, then it is, at least to some extent,
working.

What do you mean by "the browser won't load"?

Open your web browser, type a URL in the address bar and press Enter. What happens?
Do you get any error message, and if so, what is it?

Double-click My Computer> double-click Dial-Up Networking
OR
Start> Programs> Accessories> Communications> Dial-Up Networking.

What is shown in the Dial-Up Networking window, besides the Make New Connection
icon?

Right-click any connection icon shown there, then click Properties, and post back
with what settings are enabled and disabled.

Start> Control Panel> Network:
What is listed on the Configuration tab, and what are the properites for each?
