Hello all,
One of our windows 2003 servers is having a strange issue. After
running well for some days it suddenly stops displaying the logon
screen to logon. Only the grey desktop background remains. Its also
unreachable over the network and does not respond to PING requests. AD
functionality like user logon verification and replication traffic
stops working from this DC to other DC's in the same domain.
Sometimes the server happens to do this after 2 days, sometimes after
a week, so there is no real pattern in it. Only pattern in it, is that
it happens just after the backup has been finished successfully (we
use Tivoli backup software).
Server is Windows 2003 R2 with SP2 + all patches up to this month. It
already behaved like this before i applied SP 2 and the patches
released after SP2.
In the eventviewer not ONE message about why it stops working and why
there is no logon screen. Only thing i can do is to reboot the sever
using the power off, power on method :-/
Our other DC's are not experiencing this issue. only big difference
between these DC's is, is that the malfunctioning DC holds the Schema
Master Role as it is the first domain controller of the domain. The
other roles are distributed to the other DC's.
Can anyone tell me what is (a possible) cause of this mysterious
issue?
Greetings,
Bas
