Winword has performed....

M

Menno Hershberger

Windows 98 SE, Office 2000 Premium, specifically Word.
Whether trying to open it directly or by opening a document, it brings up
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."
The title bar says "Winword". Details show the error in module Winword.exe.
The other office apps work OK.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the whole office Suite. No help.
I did a repair install of Windows 98. Still no help.
The closest I could come in Google was for the error in 98 First Edition.
Microsoft had a fix for that but it wouldn't run in SE.
This computer has not been on the internet for years. I hooked it up and
got all the updates including IE 6.0.
The story is that the kids were doing their homework and all of a sudden
Word quit working.

How do I fix it?

I *will* run off to the Office group if you insist, but I always had much
better luck in here.... :)

Thanks.

Sounds like you *may* have a damaged 'normal.dot' template. One of the most
common problems with Word not opening is due to a faulty (corrupted)
'normal.dot' template. You could try renaming/deleting the 'normal.dot'
template (Don't worry, a new one will be generated, if
successful)

Take a look at the MS Knowledge Base article :-
"WD2000: Invalid Page Fault When Normal.dot Is a Document"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kben-us211541

Otherwise, you could try posting to one of the Word newsgroups

Best of luck

Mart

Yes, I remember the normal.dot thing. I had already tried that. What I
finally wound up doing was upgrading it to Ofice XP. That was kind of a
chicken's way out, but it got them going at least.

Thanks.

Well, at least you got a satisfactory conclusion. How you arrived at it is
probably far less important <g>
