Error Code 0x8007043c - some suggestions please

P

Paula Bateson

Hi,

I have been working with Microsoft since Tuesday 29/1/08 about the fact that
my computer is very S L O W (even the snails are passing it). The technician
that I was working with on Tuesday promised me a call on Friday, but
unfortunately he was sick today and another collegue call instead to try and
help.

My problem is that I cannot get the Microsoft site to do the Windows Updates
and in particular I cannot do the IE7 installation.

The technician on Tuesday left me working in Safe Mode as my computer is so
slow in normal operation.

I got online to Trend Micro and did a 'house call' scan which threw up 60
odd A4 pages of problems, mainly pointing to Cumulative Security Updates for
Internet Explorer and Vulnerability Detections with reference to different
numbers listed after the problem, eg., Cumulative Security Update for
Internet Explorer (834707). Some of the vulnerabilites make reference to
Malware and lists them.

The bottom line of it is that I am still running under Safe Mode as the
technician today said he would get back to me today, he didn't, so I guess
Monday will be the return call.

This is very frustrating as my computer is almost 12 months old, 3.2Ghz with
1Gb RAM, I have plenty of disk space and everything was ok just over a week
ago.

Even the 1.2Ghz machines at work are faster than my baby at the moment.

If anyone has a suggestion as to where I can fix at least point the
technician in the right direction, I would dearly appreciate it.

Another thing, as I live in Rural NSW, just popping it into a computer shop
is out of the question - in fact I do a lot of computer repairs for people
around this area.

Kind regards,

Paula

Your computer is infected by malware of various kinds. The scan sent you a
60 page report which documents them.
And thus, what have you done to remove the malware?
What kind of AV software are you running?

Malware is the reason that your computer is slow.

Thanks Jim,

That's what I thought I had, but the Microsoft technician didn't want to
listen.

I have Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware, but my main problem at the
moment is that I can only work in safe mode.

Could you suggest what I can use to remove the malware, usually I am way on
top of these sort of things, but I have been so stressed out by this
problem, that I need some direction from an outside source.

Kind regards,

Paula

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to
do all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using
Multi_AV in Vista.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/sicherheit/35905/multi_av_scanning_tool.html
- download site

The site is in German but David's tool is in English so don't let that
worry you. Scroll all the way down to almost the bottom of the page and
you'll see a box titled "Infos Zum Download - Multi-AV Scanning Tool".
You'll see "Download von www pctipp.ch" and the live link to download
Multi_AV.

You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your
malware here:
Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the first link above (not here, please).

Not all tools used will work in Vista and you will need to run them
elevated. If you are unable to remove the infection by following the
general steps, register at one of the HijackThis forums as suggested.

Standard disclaimer: I can't see and test your computer myself, so these
are just suggestions based on many years of being a professional
computer tech suggestions based on what you've written. You should not
take my suggestions as a definitive diagnosis. If you can't do the work
yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of
tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your
local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that
not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if they
are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be
clean-installed. If possible, have all your data backed up before you
take the machine into a shop.

The only alternative to going through the malware removal tediously and
systematically, probably with online help from an HJT forum, and taking
the machine to a real professional is to back up your data and do a
clean install of Windows. It's your call.

The MS technician would want you to use their product. It is better than
none.

Get rid of the malware using Malke's post.

Spybot and Adaware find various bad stuff, but you still need an anti-virus
program.
Almost anything except Norton or McAfee are better than what you have (which
is none).
I use Nod32 on this laptop.
I have used Norton. It is a resource hog.
I use AVG on my desktop.
I have used various others at times. The desktop will run Nod32 shortly.

Hi Jim,

I've just read your post, you are assuming I have no Antivirus Software. I
am in fact running AVG and have never had a problem with it.

I also run Spybot and Adaware, but when I run Spybot I get a popup message
about "SpybotSD.exe - No Disk" - There is no disk in the drive. Please
insert a disk into the drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR6.

Also, as I have a card reader/Floppy drive, when I built my computer the
setup when I turned the computer on, the drives automatically assigned
themselves. My drive, instead of being C: is actually J:, I looked into
reassigning the drives, but apparently I can't change the boot drive to C:

Has anyone got a suggestion as I would like to use the suggested solution
that has been posted, but the program needs C: to run.

Kind regards,

Paula
