Why does Microsoft believe that altering (without notification) settings it's users have changed is okay behavior?

Likely brought up and "answered" before, probably with obvious company-line bs - but why does Microsoft think that changing specific settings that were intentionally altered by it's users acceptable? The first (and most egregious in my opinion) was with Microsoft Update changing FIRMWARE SETTINGS TO MY MOTERBOARD BIOS! Microsoft - do you claim ownership of my physical devices as well? Is there a statement in your end-user agreement that says something to the effect of "upon installing our software, you give up both ownership and any rights you may have previously thought you had to said dev
