DVD burner with Win98FE?

D

Dee

I always assumed I couldn't install a DVD burner on my Win98 First Edition
machine because every burner I looked at in stores "required" Win98 Second
Edition. Then it occurred to me that maybe it's just the bundled software
that required SE and it was not some limitation inherent in FE that
wouldn't allow a burner to work. So is it true that I could install a
burner and use some free software, such as DeepBurner or Express Burn, that
works with Win98FE?

Thanks, Dee

If the manufacturer says SE, I would believe them. Why would they put a
false limit on the operating system requirement and limit the customers who
could use their product?

AFAIK, a burner will work with Win98 or 98SE (or even Win95) from a hardware
standpoint....it is just an optical drive. The issue would be with the software
which requires 98SE or higher.

I have a DVD burner in an old machine that dual-boots 95B and 98SE, and IIRC the
burner works in both operating systems. I don't have DVD burning software installed
in 95B, only older software for CD burning with the drive.

a)
Because all manufacturers "help" each other by making customers
think they need to buy new hardware/software - ideally both,
brand name, new, at OfficeMax - to get anything done.

b)
I bought a Logitech wireless trackball made WAY after 95 stopped
being "supported" by you-know-who, with 95 and 98 all the way to
XP listed as supported and it will NOT work under 95. Works fine
with 98SE.

The reason most manufacturers put 98SE (or Me or higher) on
their products half the time only has to do with the fact that
some or all of the software (which may or may not be totally
useless to someone with a clue) won't work with older OS's or
because they are toeing you-know-who's line AFA "no support for
95/98".

I have 2 LG CD burners, one in a 95 and one in a 98SEL machine,
and they both work just fine. Needless to say they were both
made within the last 5 or 6 years. They both came with Neroshit
but I am a proud user and owner of CDRWin from Goldenhawk which
works just fine with 95 and 98SE.

If a Sharpie isn't good enough for you and you want to make cute
labels etc. you will be much better off finding a small graphics
program or using a DTP program to do that. In all fairness,
while I consider Nero the most illogical and complicated
software I ever had the misfortune of using, their "label
design" software - while I have not bothered actually USING it -
does appear to have all the features. But it's a long way from
features to quality, as many who buy a "Car Of The Year" will
attest to.

I forgot to mention the actual DRIVER for the LG drives was
written in 1997. It's the Win (or whatever) SOFTWARE that makes
them burners of CD's and DVD's. The basic driver just makes the
thing spin and the laser light up.

Sorry to jump into the thread, I`ve just installed a Lite-On dvdrw lh-20a1h
burner in an old 98se machine and can`t get the nero software that it came
bundled with it to work. Can you recommend some DVD burning software that I
can use preferably free.
Thanks

There's lots, but I like the older free versions of Silentnight Microburner. No
installation, but put the .exe file in a folder, create a shortcut on your desktop
or start menu, and start it.

Microburner v.4:
http://www.freewarearena.com/html/Downloads/details/id=1696.html

Download the file named Micro20.exe, using the link listed under the "Filename"
column on the download page:

I installed a PVR whose documentation stated that it was limited to
2K/XP. In fact it was only the Installshield automatic installer that
was limited in this way, not the drivers, nor the application
software. They all ran quite happily on Win98SE. The product was crap,
though.

It is nice to get confirmation that others have successfully installed
hardware that supposedly "wouldn't work" with W98.

I guess nobody on this ng has a DVD with W98FE, then. I have no pressing
need for it, but maybe in a fit of boredom I'll buy one and try it out
just for giggles.

I both Win98SE and Windows XP dual booted on my system and they both work
fine but I cannot for the life of me get my 98SE system to recognize my DVD
burner. I have a Trios hardware switch box with a CD burner and DVD burner
attached and have to switch it to the CD side in Win98 then switch it to
the DVD drive to use in XP. Would anyone have any idea why my DVD drive or
any DVD drive that I have tried isn't recognized by Win98? I did back up my
original 98 partition and reinstalled it fresh and it is recognized then
but once I put back the original 98 image no happenings. Other than that
everything is fine software and hardware wise.

Have you tried removing ALL drives and drive controllers in Device Manager,
then reboot to have them installed again?
