Battery Caibrate - 87% charge

To calibrate my battery, it's been told I need to drain my battery, charge it to 100%, switch on the laptop and calibrate.Now, my battery would charge to only 87% and then stop charging when switched off but charges to 99% when switched on.How do I fix this?
