Touchpad won't work like I want

My recently purchased laptop has a Synaptic SMBus Touchpad Version 19.0.19.73 that won't allow me to scroll using one finger along the side of the pad or scroll from anywhere on a page. I have to move the cursor over to the scroll bar then use one hand to hold down the left button on the pad and then move my finger over the pad to scroll. It also won't let me set up using a single rather than a double click to select items. The scrolling is very jumpy as well and not smooth.
