Username in the start menu changes to logon name

This is causing me problems on two different server2003 sbs servers. after a
while, no idea how long it takes but something like an hour or two, when you
click on Start, the name at the top has gone from "John Doe [Widgets
Incorporated]" to "johnd" where johnd is the user's logon name.

At first logon, the John Doe [Widgets Incorporated] is displayed at the top
of the start menu, but after a while, it has changed and the Outllok
connection to the Exchange server is slow to the point of being unuseable.
Log off and back on cures all of this for a while.

I have not yet installed SP2 as I am trying to read through ALL of the many
issues and work arounds for SP2.

The problem is not unique to a user or pc but some suffer more than others.

Hi Microman,

You could try enabling your domains default Group Policy "remove user name
from start menu" found in User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \
Start Menu and Taskbar

I am not sure however what this would have to do with your outlook-exchange
slowdown issue. Are there any other speed or perhaps dns issues on your
network?

Hi,

maybe I'm not describing it well. This is a problem which manifests itself
as the name changing. We lose the ability to communicate with the server, but
we do not lose the tcp/ip connection. I can still connect to the pc by VNC
and see the name has changed, but the PCs access to server resources is
brutally slow.

When we log in it displays the correct name, and is fine for anything from
10 minutes to a couple of hours and then we click on start and see the name
displayed at the top of the start menyu has changed from the display name to
the login name and we have lost the ability to get Outlook to respond.
Usually the first hint we get is that Outlook is not responding and that
makes us click on start to check the name.

On one of the servers this is also normally followed by a message when we
try to reboot which tells me the sytem cannot save the roanming profile. Th
eodd thing ios that I can still VNC to the machine so I suspect the network
card is fine.

After reading this additional info I'm inclined to think that the issue lies
with the server that hosts the roaming profiles (is it also the PDC
emulator?) .
Are there any error messages in the log on this server?
During a brutally slow event are you able to ping that server from a pc via
IP, and also then are you able to ping via its servername, and both with the
same speeds as during a normal period?
Are there any 3rd party applications on that server which we can disable?
The amount of times ive seen these slowdown and lockup a server is crazy.
