Unknown date file name error while copying files from USB to Desktop

A search shows this question here: Redirecting but no solution is seen. 7 years later I find myself with the exact same problem.I copied files (Excel 2010 and Word 2010) to the desktop from my USB and it says it does not know the date. Two days later, with files which should by now have a date since I placed them there (and how can any file not have a date) it gives me the same error-like message.
