Mouse pointer static on desktop

My daughter uses Win98 (Not sure) at work and the mouse pointer is
static on the desktop. The mouse and another mouse, which works, has
been tried in the PS2 port and the USB port, but without success. The
keyboard is working OK. I have advised her to look at 'Mouse' in Device
Manager to see if 'This device is working properly' and to make
absolutely sure that the mouse is properly connected, but she is not at
work until Tuesday. Any other ideas please?

Though you gave correct advice...
it can be a bit hard to navigate without a mouse...
but if she can get that figured out...
she should try to delete all instances of "mouse" in device manager...then
reboot.
BTW: If the mice they tried were all PS/2 type and they used a PS/2 to USB
adaptor...
they should probably try an actual PS/2 mouse.

As a last resort...
a serial mouse is often likely to work if all else fails...
They can usually be obtained at a 2nd hand shop for a dollar or two

Do you think the SCANREG /RESTORE may help in this type of fault?

If the mouse just quit within the past few days
then that's a possibility. The registry is supposed to store the previous 5
entries
