screen background

It's been a while since I've played with ME.
the issue is this, when booting into windows a background picture loads,
then upon a user entering his password and his profile loads another (wanted)
background loads, how can I get rid of the first background picture.
just have a default windows picture loaded.

Try booting to Safe Mode. If you now see the unwanted background image as
the desktop, change/remove it. Hopefully when now booting to Normal Mode
you won't see the unwanted image.

I tried your suggestion, however it's not listed as part of the background in
safe mode, I have searched the entire pc and can't find this jpeg, it's got
to be somewhere on here.

More likely a bmp as jpgs require the active desktop to be on to be
displayed or it could be an html document if being displayed using Active
Desktop. Check also for the presence of a customised initial splash
screen which would be a file with the name "logo.sys". If located delete
or rename. No need to replace as Win Me doesn't need such a file, the
default Win Me splash screen being part of io.sys (do not remove or delete
this file).

If none of this works try disabling Active Desktop using TweakUI and see
if you can now see the unwanted background wallpaper and remove it. Do
this using TweakUI by unchecking the boxes "Allow Active Desktop" and
"Allow changes to Active Desktop" found on the IE Settings tab of TweakUI.

If you haven't got TweakUI the Win Me compatible version (1.33) can be
downloaded from Microsoft
(http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/powertoys/networking/nttweakui.asp)
and installed as follows:

Download to a folder with a short name (e.g. C:\Tweak), run to extract
components, right click on tweakui.inf and then install, close the help
window that comes up to allow install to finish. C:\Tweak can now be
deleted and TweakUI accessed via the Control Panel.

Just a few words of caution if you are new to using TweakUI on Win Me.
a) Do not change the first icon (My Documents) on the Desktop tab.
Doing this causes a number of script errors in Special Folders when using
either WebView or Active desktop.
b) Do not uncheck "Search Results" on the Desktop tab.
Doing this disables the Search in Explorer.
c) Do not hide the TweakUI icon on the Control Panel tab.
d) Do not uncheck "Show Control Panel on Start Menu" on the IE tab.
Doing this will prevent you from accessing the Control Panel including
TweakUI.
e) Do not uncheck "Shell Enhancements" on the IE tab.
This causes quite a few unexpected "problems".

Hi Mike,,
I was just browsing around this group when I came across this post,
and I found that the link above only leads to a promo for Vista,,,, I
copied
the link that your above link defaults to::::
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/default.mspx
do you have perhaps a tiny url or better link?? I would also like the 'me'
version of TweakUI.

J

ps, I clicked on your link 3 times, same deal.

Jeanette,

Sorry about that. Probably easiest to use Download.com. The url for that
is http://www.download.com/3000-2341-2830963.html. I've compared the
download with the copy I downloaded from Microsoft in April 2000 when
first released during Win Me testing and it is identical so no worries
there.

Please read the notes about using TweakUI in my earlier post.

Cheers,

Hi Mike - interesting to see that MS have pulled TweakUI from your earlier
url which was still working until quite recently (last couple of months?)

Sign of the times?

Mart

Mart,

Thanks for that, I was sure that link was working quite recently. Sadly I
feel that MS are less and less concerned about their smaller users
regardless of the OS or product they are using and instead are more and
more focussing on their large enterprise customers.

I believe this to be very much the case with it probably having become
more obvious/prominent in Microsoft's case in say the last three or so
years. For example Microsoft are no longer listening to their beta
testers let alone their users and are driving onwards and downwards
towards some unstated goal. Just one small example is I feel the entire
Windows Live Mail debacle in all its many forms, Windows Mail, Windows
Live Mail Desktop, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Hotmail, etc. This has
been a complete and utter shambles from start to finish with those
responsible seemingly unaccountable to anyone for providing properly
functioning software. As ever marketing and legal are being allowed full
rein and killing innovation and functionality in most areas.

Microsoft seems hell-bent on the software as a service model earning money
via advertising and taking on the likes of Google whereas I feel instead
it should build on its strengths and provide quality robust installable
software - assuming that it still has staff who know what that means and
involves.
