I realize that this question was answered at the posting with the identical title by Jason Schempp. However, the individual who solved the problem advised me to post a new question to describe my situation. In my system all of the cases that produce the "This file does not..." error have occurred in Mozilla Thunderbird (TB). TB periodically reports that an update is available and I always let TB upload the update. Which means that the TB software was up to date when the errors in question were observed.
