Windows 10 - Explorer preview pane not working consistently. Contents sometimes flash on momentarily.

I've got an unusual problem. When I try to preview a word .doc or .docx file, the contents sometimes flash up momentarily in the preview pane, then the preview pane goes white. The problem occurs when the .doc or .docx file is on a local or networked folder. There's no problem with previewing .pdf files. This is an intermittent problem - sometimes it works as expected, and at other times, the preview pane remains blank. I have reinstalled MS Word to the latest MS 360 version. I'm running 64 bit windows 10 with all updates.Can somebody help?
