How do I sign in to Windows on an old laptop if I can't remember the password?

How do I log in into an old laptop that keeps asking me to use the last password that was used on the computer but I've forgotten what that is? My current windows password won't work, I need to use the last password that was used to log in. I've tried the repair functions such as reset my PC, restore my PC, I've tried to reinstall windows using the installation software provided on the Microsoft website using a USB, but I just an error message every time. Even booting up in safe mode with command prompt and using the net user command to reset the password didn't work. I've removed the CMOS bat
