Hi, Margie,

The standards are SpywareBlaster [they also offer the old SpywareGuard] by
JavaCool, donations appreciated.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
SpyBot Search and Destroy [safer-networking.org] was still available as of a
few weeks ago and still free, though donations are appreciated.
http://www.safer-networking.org/

There are some anti-virus/anti-SpyWare suites available which offer
real-time protection [to various degrees and effectiveness]. However, this
is one of the application areas I am presently running comparison tests in,
so at the moment I can't really provide much more.

Margie,
On 13 Feb 08, I downloaded SpyBot 1.5.1.12 with latest detection update
2/13/2008 to my Windows 98 SE and it seems to work fine. The day before I
had downloaded update 2/06/2008, ran it and removed a lot of "stuff" I
didn't want. This seems to be their web site:
http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html . My son put SpyBot on my computer a
few years ago and I just 'update' it without plugging in their web site to
get the updates however, I just went to their web site to get the info for
you. Here is the web site of a columnist (Betty Champagne) who offers free
advice and refers us to many 'free" programs http://www.bitsnpcs.info
Good luck!

Thats odd, I have been running Ad-Aware for several years. I update
it a few times a year. (probably should do it more often). I last
updated in Nov. 07. No problems.....

Maybe the latest version is only for XP and Vista (possibly Win2k
also). However, there is probably an archive of the older versions on
their site. Find one for Win98. Install it and get the upgrades.

I sont know what you mean by the "old" Spybot. I still use that too,
and upgraded it a few weeks ago. I never paid for it. I've heard
that there are sites trying to rip people off by selling these free
programs. DO NOT do business with them, and if I find sites like that
I will generally try to notify the author of the software and give
them the URL so they can take legal action or whatever.

Go to the ORIGINAL sites, or try to get it from one of the trusted
download sites like tucows.com or download.com
Avoid links on other websites that try to lure you in to "free"
(anything). Much of that is a ripoff.

You can still get Ad Aware SE Personal here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/AdAware-SE-Personal-Download-13916.html

You must manually update it as the updater provision no longer works.
I am not sure how much longer that they will provide updates for it, I
would check here periodocally for updates. You need to unzip them and
etract them into the AdAware directoty where they will replace the
older definitions.

Took AdAware off my Win98SE computer, went to Spyware Terminator which
continues to support 98SE. Unlike AdAware which usually updates about
once per week, Spyware Terminator seems to update daily, Mon-Fri. As a
non-techie, just my experience, Spyware Terminator works great for me
along with Spyware Blaster, Avast (sometimes updates twice per day),
Sygate Personal Firewall, rarely see any invasive malware on my
computer.

I've also used this link to fetch the newest "defs.ref" file in a zip
archive.

Thanks for the manual download link, after automatic downloading stopped
working I had given up using the product. Simpler fix to get more legs out
of my product.

I got this link for the posters, but what I do is check these 2 sites
daily for updates and then use their download link or open the program
when I know it has an update. These sies post lots of other programs
that have updates as well so I can find it all in one place and know
what needs updating. The dozleng one is particularly good.
