External Hard Drive

I installed an extra internal hard drive into my my Dell Inspiron Laptop by removing the back of the laptop. However after doing this my external hard drive (connected by USB) no longer shows in "this PC". So I removed the internal extra hard drive. But still the external hard drive (USB Connection) still does not not show. I have many folders saved on the external hard drive which I do not want to loose! I have tried a Windows 10 in-place upgrade but still my external hard drive does not show, Any ideas?
