Windows Registry Rebuilder error

[Warren]

When I run the registry rebuilder it gets 85 % complete and then says it
cannot fix a file error and aborts. My Win98SE machine seems to work fine,
so is this message a reliable indicator of a serious problem ?

Thanks Gary,

Can you recommend an alternate tool for defragmenting the registry, or is it
best to just leave it alone ? I do clean the registry of obsolete entries
from time to time.

I'd continue as you are now. Clean as you feel like it (I presume you are a
cautious man), forget about "defragmenting" or "optimizing".

Well, OK, if you really want to get anal, there's the old Export/Import
trick. And that's all the hint I'm going to give.

....and FWIW, I recall reports that trying the old Win95 compacting method in that
situation resulted in getting an error also, so it may be best to just fagetaboutit.

The problem is usually the result of having a system.dat file (the system portion of
the Registry) larger than about 9 or 10 MB.

I have also had this issue, but you are probably referring to the
scanreg /fix command where the registry is rebuilt. You may still be
able to use the scanreg /opt command which removes the spaces where
items were deleted thus compacting the registry. There is also a
scanreg /restore command if something goes wrong. Notice the space
before the slash.
