IN Word and Exel, the recent file list appears but can't be opened despite files existing.

When working on Word and Excel documents and I access the "recent Files "tab, the full list of recent documents lists as expected. However, any attempt to open any of them results in a message indicating "Can't open" and that the documents is "deleted or inaccessible". When I go to the same files directly, they are as filed and fully open-able/accessible. This situation is relatively new so I must have inadvertently switched something somewhere by accident. Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it?? Thanks!Working on an 2018 iMac using Microsoft 365 in home.
