External Hard Drive takes boot priority, and freezes software when trying to fix,

So one of my external hard drives has randomly decided to block my PC when I boot up with it plugged in (black screen, underscore) the PC boots up fine without it, I check the BIOS and the Hard drive isn't there on the boot menu because it's not plugged in, if I plug it in the BIOS freezes and unfreezes again after I remove it.Once booted up the PC doesn't recognise the hard drive being plugged in, no USB ports on the device manager recognise it as existing, but when I go to Disk management with the thing plugged in, it stays stuck on 'loading virtual disk drives', or also doesn't recognise it
