Reinstalling Windows 98 Upgrade

I have a computer with a dual boot setup to windows 98 and Linex. I want to
reformat the hard drive and remove the partions that exist and install only
windows 98. My problem is that the windows 98 CD I have is an upgrade
edition. It says I need windows 3.1 or 95 installed to use the CD. Is
there someway I can reformat the hard drive and still install from the CD.

IF it is the "UPGRADE" version:
If you have any older version of Windows, from 3.1. to 95 [98 if what
you're referring to is SE], on either floppy or CD, tell the installation
program to look at that when asked. Its looking for a qualifying product,
not an actual installation.

Of course make sure to pre-check that before wiping the drive, as the 98
"Second Edition Updates" CD qualifying product is 98 installed.

Somewhere I have a list of files that were looked for [not very many
actually] which could be placed on the drive in a folder to fudge a
qualifying installation, but that was too long ago and that material was
packed away. Might try searching the NET as it was standard fair on old
95/98 help and "tips and tricks" sites.

a dummy file such as win.cnf , win.cn_ or win.com might work

You only need copies of the installation files from the old versions in
order to use the Upgrade version. It doesn't need to be installed. You must
have all of the media (3.11 floppies, 95 floppies, etc.)

Hint: You could use BootIt NG to resize, create & delete partitions in order
to allow you some flexibility for testing scenarios.

I ws thinking the same thing. Partition Magic is another program that
will remove, resize, modify, etc partitions. I use it, I love it.
It's a bit pricey, but consider how much time you will have to spend
reinstalling everything.

If I recall correctly, to install Win95 upgrade, all you had to do was
to install DOS (to format and all of that), then make a directory
called "Windows", and put WIN.COM from Windows 3.11 in that dir. I'm
guessing that W98 was the same. I am not positive, so dont rely on
this.

I do think you'd find it much easier to just use Partition Magic or
something similar (If you have anything on your drive besides just the
basic Windows).

So why do you want to get rid of Linux? Just curious. I tried it,
(on a spare computer) and hated it. This was quite a few years ago
though. After it was installed, I found it would not do anything
properly, most stuff did not work at all, and it seemed like I needed
a college degree to understand any of it. I finally formatted the
drive and installed OS2 Warp, which at that time was a decent OS.
