My audio devices (Internal Laptop Speaker & External system) are backward. I have to select the internal speakers to get the external to work and vice

Hi,My external Edifier system will only work when I select the interanl Targus speaker. They still sound fine but I then lose the ability to control L & R Audio. When I select the Edifier system, then my internal targus speaker plays and I have the option to adjust L & R audio but I only have the one speaker. How can I correct this issue so the audio setting appropriate for each device are enabled when that device is actually working?
