Can Someone tell me how to use laptop and monitor simotaneously through extended display?

The windows extended display doesn't actually extend. Every time I try to do stuff like go to chrome on my monitor, it only shows up on my laptop instead. I've already tried updating it, it will not let me. I did a troubleshoot but nothing was wrong. What do I do?
