network card install and vip.386

Tried to install a network card with no success. Seems similar to the
following (see link below) but I don't understand how to see the
"illegal operation" messages that are mentioned. All I know is that
the installation chokes right after the vip.386 popup is clicked on
and then after the reboot the device manager says the network card has
been disabled because it caused a problem at startup. Network card
hardware is known good. I don't know if the vip.386 file is relevant
to this problem or not. Any ideas? Thanks.

No, same result in either slot. The vip.386 file must be irrelevant,
but some sort of conflict is preventing the network card from being
initialized. Is there a standard debugging process for this sort of
problem? I have the same network card and driver working on a similar
computer.

You can try booting to safe mode
then deleting all instances of "network adaptor"

then reboot and reinstall.

If that does not work try a different model of net card.

Occasionally I'll have a know, working card just plain not work in a
particular machine

Does your computer already have an onboard NIC and if so, did you
disable it in BIOS. My version of vip.386 is 4.10.2226 and is newer
than what came with 989SE. I would remove the card, go to safe mode
and delete all network adapters other than dialup. I would then boot
into normal mode and install the cards drivers. Then shut down and
install the card and hopefully when the machine boots up it will find
the card and drivers. My Linksys card runs fine even though it was
not supposed to have 98 drivers.
